"Penny Rugs became popular in the late 1800's as decorative accents for tables and beds. The colorful designs  were usually adorned with leaves and flowers and other natural motifs. After the Civil War, most were made using small scraps of fabric and circle patterns. Penney coins were actually used to make the circles, giving the craft it's popular name. Today's penny rugs are made with wool felt and blanket stitched appliques -timeless folk-art designs that engender an inviting atmosphere." Barbie Jo Paquin
